I was more impressed with the idea of big gestures.

The yearning for public proclamations of ‘kid, I’m proud of you’;

appreciation posts of our long-term friendship;

or being showered with gifts on birthdays;

basically thinking that love’s equivalent,

is solely surrounding being doted on.

There was a day when I noticed

that a friend of mine was not acting his normal self.

His back was hunched up in a hoodie;

a seemingly blank expression on his face;

and he was fiddling around with his phone.

I decided to take a seat in front of him,

And just asked how he was.

It sounded so simple,

how could a ‘how are you’ be so impactful?

But I remembered that I did not regret asking that question that day,

and the slight smile of relief on his face after he shared about what was bothering him,

warmed my heart.

It made me drive my focus away from what was bothering me,

and I was able to have a clearer mind to deal with it after.

My mother always loved watching the sun set,

and I figured she liked the different variations of colors each time.

However once when we were watching the sunset;

she asked me to look towards the east;

where the dark clouds were encroaching.

I was confused as I peeled my eyes away from the bright, warm colors in the west.

Was not her focus always on the beautiful, vibrant colors?

She smiled and told me about how the bright skies were still as full of life,

and oh how beautiful they were,

despite them almost being swallowed into the dark clouds.

The sunset was just like life.

During the hard times, all the bad things will demand our attention;

but we will have to turn and look at the little things instead;

and these very things,

these are what will save us.

Our actions do have an impact on others,

more than we realize.

You are more than you can fathom,

and you have the power to change the world: with love.
